Be Strong, Be Inspired, Be Better

When I started this blog, I wanted it to be a place where I could express my love and passion for natural hair. I also want this site to be a place of inspiration, where people can escape their worries for 5 minutes with tutorials, humor, and encouragement. Over the next few weeks I will have posts that aim to make us feel better. Women, children, and men. Each post may have some sort of inspiration added in or be inspirational on its own. Trust me, there will still be post about hair, but I feel like everyone needs a little joy added to their day especially with the way the world is right now. All posts are open to discussion, advice, and ideas. BUT THERE WILL BE NO SHAMING OR HATING OR JUDGEMENT OR NEGATIVITY!

The thing about being natural--whether with your hair or your life--is to be free. Free of feeling that the world is trying beat you down or that you're not good enough no matter what. This is not that zone. This is not that place. As I grow, I want those who view this blog to grow with me. So expect to see hair, expect to see happiness, and expect to be inspired.

Feel free to express how this post made you feel, or how your day is going. And be on the lookout for a new post this week.

The shock. The awe. The third day hair! The mane is tamed and looking beautiful.

Well excuse my fetus face, but I thought I would let the world see this curly half pony. Everywhere I went that day people were doing double takes and complimenting my hair. I really loved this hairstyle since it was so easy to pull up and clip down. And, because this was third day hair, a lot my length was showing. Now by the end of the day, shrinkage did kick in, but it still looked great. So many people--who are accustomed to seeing me in my twistouts, buns, and puffs--were shocked to see my hair longer than usual, and they thought I added hair in. That's the joy of natural hair. When they think they've seen it all--BOOM--switch it up!

I am considering if I should straighten my hair since it has been awhile. I would love to know just how much it has grown. Plus I need a trim too. Well, that is my quick little hair post. Be on the lookout for another coming soon.

It's December!!

We are only a few weeks away from Christmas, and celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. Now I know we should celebrate the life and birth of our Lord and Savior everyday, but anyone who attends church knows that Christmas is when we go crazy. Church plays are happening, Christmas music is playing all day long, carolers everywhere you go, lights are hung, presents are wrapped, cocoa is made, Christmas shows are on every channel, and no matter where you go there is either a nativity scene set up or someone is reading the story of when Jesus was born. I don't know about you but Christmas is one of my favorite holidays, and I just love to see how cities and towns evolve from everyday buildings and business to lights and glitter and garland and fat Santas everywhere.

Well, sadly, my house is not completely decorated, but here is a picture of our Christmas tree. We decided to break away from the traditional green tree and we never get a real tree. I heard bugs are in those things, and my soul can not withstand any bugs. No No No. We went with a blue theme this year, and as you can see we already have a few presents under the tree. I am pretty excited about it, if you can't tell. I think we have decided to put up garland around the house. I'll probably update this post if that happens.

Extra tidbit for you:
If you are Christmas crazy like me check out 104.7 the fish if you live in Georgia. This radio station is playing Christmas music all day everyday during the month of December. If you do not live in Georgia, you can still listen to the FISH by clicking their logo (and clicking listen live on their site) right here:

Happy Monday Everyone!! I hope your Thanksgiving holiday went well. I filled my belly with turkey and avoided being punched in the face during Black Friday. I made it out with a tv that was desperately needed and sore feet that I could have lived without. But that is not what this post is about! This post is about a very delicious delectable called SWEET POTATO CASSEROLE!!

This was my first time making the dish, and it actually came out pretty good. I made a mistake that ended up making the casserole better, and I successfully tweaked a recipe. I found the recipe on the back on the can that I bought the sweet potatoes in, but, after my adjustments, it became my own little dessert.

Here is the ingredient list:
  • 1 can of Sweet Potatoes
  • 2/3 cup of juice from can
  • 2/3 cup of light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup of butter
  • 1 bag of marshmallows

The sweet potato casserole came out sweet enough to be a dessert but not too sweet, so it could still be a side. The original recipe called for the oven to be at 350 degrees and no marshmallows, but it came out really delicious the way I did it.

Thanksgiving was really good this year, just like this casserole. Let me know if you give it a try, and if you do some recipe tweaking of your own. Let me know. What was the best part of your Thanksgiving, or what are you thankful for?

See ya in the next post,
Sylvia

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving from us to you. I hope everyone is enjoying time with family, friends, and other loved ones. Remember to appreciate and be thankful for what is around. Even if your situation does not seem great or promising at the moment, God's plan is perfect and it will all come together. This is a time to reflect on the things in your life that make you happy. The people, the places, and anything else in your life that brings you joy on the inside. Do not let the worries of this world bring you down. Remember who you are and whose you are, because that is what is important. I know that I am thankful for my family and friends, and for the fact that this year is so much better than last year. I am so thankful that I allowed God to control my life and lead me to a place that I never thought I would be--emotionally, physically, mentally, and spiritually. I am thankful that I graduated from my University this past May, and that everyone I love was there to share that moment with me. I am thankful that at the beginning of this year, I was able to visit my family and attend church with them for New Years, which is what help to motivate me throughout the rest of this year. This has been my Year of Divine Increase, and believing in that and on God's word had taken me further in past 11 months than anything else in the past 23 years. I am grateful to be in a place of peace, and to feel as if my life is a lot more under control than it has ever been.  Take a breath, say a prayer, be thankful for the life you are still blessed to live, and give it to God.

Happy Thanksgiving and Be Blessed,
Sylvia

Can I start this off first by saying Thank God for Lizzy from Your Cup of Cake, and that I hope she finds her way to this post. She made my day when I found her post about these deliciously adorable cupcakes. And, if you know me, you know that I drool over anything cute or anything edible. Soooo, when I found something cute and edible...honey...honey...honey...yes! I was wayyy too ready to make this dessert when I first saw it, and thankfully my new job allows for such occasions as for me to express my need for cuteness through food. So now that my little rant is out of the way, let me walk you through this beautiful creation.

You see that turkey there. Yep. I made that. And it's pretty cute if I do say so myself. It took me a while to decorate these suckers, but that is probably because of my impromptu photoshoot after every step and every time I got excited about how good these would look.

So I did a little mixin' and pourin'

And bakin'

And Some D E C O R A T I N G !!!

What I did a little differently:

Now, I did not make these little gobblers from scratch but the box mix and frosting made wonderful cupcakes. Your Cup of Cake's recipe called for one bag of Reese's Pieces, but I needed two since my bags were filled with mostly orange pieces. Also, instead of white chocolate melts I used orange chocolate melts, I bought pre-made eyes, and my turkeys have no gobbles.

I honestly enjoyed making these cupcakes, and they definitely made heads turn at the office. Everyone thought I had store bought cupcakes, but I was delighted to let them know that I am a walking bakery. As always, I will include the link to Lizzy's blog. Check it out. There are some awesome ideas and recipes on her site.  Click my turkey to see Lizzy's turkeys.

Naturally Feeling Myself!

I'm not going to lie. I was feeling myself today. My whole day had been going well. I even woke up like a Disney princess. Shoot I could have broke out in song, but I'll save the world from that. But, no seriously. I woke up happy, my makeup was nice, my ootd totally displayed who I am, and my hair was a happy mistake. I was literally sitting in bed playing with my hair. Then I got up to get ready for my day when I saw my hair in the mirror, and I just fell in love with it. I tell you honey, nothing could stop my day and it didn't. So here are a few picture of me loving me.

Not only was I admiring me, but others were too. And, I promise you that I am not narcissistic, but I did receive compliments that made me feel really good about myself. Plus, I wasn't just thinking of myself. I felt like I was representing my natural sistahs well. I had on my Africa earrings from the Taliah Waajid hairshow (which I will talk about in a later post), and my hair was natural as natural can be. To sum this all up, I guess I would say that waking up in a good mood with good thoughts gave me a good day. So before waking up on the wrong of the bed, just roll over a get up on the right side. It can really change your whole day.

Thanks for listening,
Syl.
